Examples of my Coaching
My very first client was memorable for many reasons: a high school junior with above average intelligence, good grades until mid-way in his junior year, who, all of a sudden, dropped off the honor roll, lost his close friends and became involved with alcohol. His parents couldn't understand why their son had made this about face and called me to see if I would take him on as a life coaching client. I accepted the referral although I prefer to work with clients who are already motivated and seek me out. (My clients are individuals who don't need "fixing" but aspire to a more fulfilled life.)
He came reluctantly to a consultation meeting and we began the process of getting to know each other and establishing trust. He was concerned about confidentiality and I needed to determine if I should attempt to work with him or to refer him to a therapist.* I resolved his concerns, explained the coaching-client process and we agreed to work together. It appeared to me I would be able to help him.
Two subsequent coaching sessions were conducted in person in order to solidify our relationship, pin point goals, establish strategies for attaining them and benchmarks for tracking our progress. The balance of our sessions were conducted by phone, usually weekly, with an E-mail here and there to reinforce agreed to steps and strategies.
He enjoyed our interaction - and so did I - and he made great headway in resolving the issues that had caused him to falter. By the end of his junior year we agreed our work together was finished. And we parted company with the understanding that we could reconnect if the need arose.
Footnote: From that day forward his parents referred to me as "the magic man".
Another client arrived at my service having found me on the internet and wanting badly to resolve an interpersonal problem. It seems she and a life-long friend had a serious disagreement and couldn't resolve it. She needed to talk to someone outside of her circle of friends and family and decided to give me a try. We met for a consultation, hit it off, agreed to work together and established goals and strategies. The next four meetings were conducted by phone over a period of about one month. There was no fifth meeting. Our strategies paid off and our work together was finished.
Footnote: Most of my client relationships last anywhere from a month to a year although I still have an on-and-off one that has lasted eight years.
